5 Reasons You Should Do A StepBet

Every year around Christmas, you know the drill:

1. Shop, shop, shop.
2. Eat, eat, eat.
3. Freak out about New Year Resolutions!

Then I would spend the whole next week (who am I kidding, it takes almost a whole month) to over think and pick the perfect resolution to lose weight.

That’s how I felt this time. I’ve read so many studies, articles, blog posts yet here I was kind of in an analysis paralysis.   I knew that only me has the power to get moving, to stop overthinking and to start moving forward.

Now, there are more games like this to help with weight loss but I’m in this journey of relearning what makes a 40-something-year-old body tick again. That’s why those that are geared at losing pounds don’t get me excited.

StepBet (really) makes you put your money where your mouth is.

Just the thought of losing money is enough to get this body moving. The price of admission is just $40 and you can only play one game at a time.

Reason #2: Great Way To Get Moving For 40-Year-Olds

Truth to be told, I’ve tried to be a runner.

Yes, to my credit, I have done two half marathons and really want to do more but when you are overweight, well, running can be a pain (everywhere!)

Since the whole point of doing StepBet is getting more steps in, it doesn’t matter how fast you take those steps.

This 40 something body is so appreciative of this fact! What if it takes me longer to hit goal? That’s cool. What matters is that to keep moving.

That’s cool. These past six weeks, my husband joined me in leisure-ish evening walks to help me get to goal. That’s how we have established doing a 5K every Sunday morning!

Reason #3: The System Set Your Goals

This is the part I loved the most in my first StepBet and the one I worried the most when I joined the game.

For far too long, (more than I care to admit) I’ve been doing the bed to desk, to kitchen back to desk and let’s go to sleep dance. My #1 excuse? I don’t have time. I’m growing a business over here.

Oh, the lies we tell ourselves sometimes.

The goal is not an arbitrary or outrageous number. Once you decide if you are using an activity tracker or using your health app on your cell phone, the game looks at the data and spits out a personalized goal.

Furthermore, you get to see your goal steps before handing them your hard earned money to join a game.

Reason #4: Have phone, will step away!

Really, if you have a cell phone, you can do this!

It’s all about carving time for yourself. I mentioned that on Sundays we go out to walk a 5k. The hour that it takes us to walk without looking at a computer or “acting busy” yields me really close my normal day step goal. (Right now that is around 7,500 steps)

Make an appointment with yourself to meet your stretch goal days, though. I found myself walking in circles (literally) at night to make sure I got my steps in.

On the picture below you can notice that on Wednesday, I almost hit it but didn’t. It’s important in my opinion, to be on the lookout because you don’t want to get disqualified for being absent minded about your steps.

Reason #5: You Only Lose Money If You Don’t Move

You have nothing to lose.

You have the first week of a challenge to decide if you want to keep going or request a refund. This “warm up” week won’t count against you if you don’t hit goal. It is designed to show you the ropes of the game.

They also state that you although there might not be enough money on the pot, you will always get your $40 bet back if you win your game. You break even! That’s still much better than sitting on your butt.

Now, to be clear, StepBet keeps 25% of the gross pot to cover their fees and administrative support. At the time of this review, they are still in the introductory period and the fee is just 12.5%.

If you need to withdraw for medical reasons you might be able to get your money back as well, just don’t wait until the game is over. Check the official rules first.

      You can totally do it. My tip is to keep an eye on your step throughout the day so you know where you stand. (Sorry, but love puns intended!)
