McFarland USA: cornerstone of family and inspiration #MiFamilia #McFarlandUSA #ad

If you put a foot in front of the other you are a runner.

Looking back to our teenage years, sports was so not our thing.  We watched plenty of sport events… that counts, right? We were more like math sprinkled with science before STEM was cool.

Fast forward a few years (don’t burst my bubble, it’s just a few years in my mind. ;)) Two precious memories come to mind after I watched the movie McFarland USA.

The first memory is all about how my familia embraced my gringo husband. I brought home my own “Jim White” (albeit the running coach career but otherwise kind of similar traits). For my now husband and I, it was important to have my mami and papi blessing for our relationship. And now may I dare to say they love their son more than their daughter. OK, maybe I’m exaggerating some but you get the point.

Many days of great food like paellas or pasteles and a few merengue music nights made us closer. Telling stories and other day to day cuentos made us… I’d say united, but we already were, so I’d rather say it made us a more loving and supportive family.

For example, it was hysterical to the adults in the family when my nephew, in all seriousness, taught my husband what he needed to do on the Día de Reyes eve. It’s the tradiciones that keep us alive!

If you put a foot in front of the other you are a runner.

Once my sister picked up running as her hobby, all the other sister little by little have gravitated towards running as well. Running does something to families (like evidenced in the movie) to grow tighter and more supportive.

I remember very well packing my running shoes and apparel to run together when we visit her. Hasta el marido, packed his athletic looking shoes! In the beginning even my best-and-only husband (ha!) went with us and I can remember even when I’m typing this the little taunting he did for me to go faster… just like her if even for 15 seconds.

These days we all are into running. My familia couldn’t be more proud of this. They love how running has brought all five sisters together again. We all get together thanks to the magic of tracking apps and social media to share our journey.

And that’s what I love this movie. It was seeing the courage, the determination and the sacrifices that everybody from the kids, to the families to the community did on the true story of a 1987 cross country team from predominantly Mexican-American McFarland High School, in McFarland, California.

This is not just a story of a personal sports victory, but how a community was inspired to keep pursuing their dreams in a new country as well. McFarland USA is now available for the first time on Blu-ray Comb Pack & Disney Movies Anywhere.

If you have thought of putting a foot in front of the other this movie will give you that little push you’ll need to just do it. I know I am and will add re-watching this movie right before my first half-marathon I get to run with my sister later this fall.

I was apprehensive at first because we are not a movie family but after watching it I was kicking myself for not watching it sooner.
